AVOID GAMBLING                                                                                                                            Dr Wole Gbogboade

Text: Proverbs 13: 11

 Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears;

wealth from hard work grows over time.” Proverbs 13: 11 (NLT)

Advance Learners Dictionary explains gambling as follows:

1- Speculation: smart money, pyramid, stake, stakes, bet, wager, jackpot, pool, kitty

2-risk, peril, danger, chance, crapshoot, money doubling

1-   No proper work done

2-   Money won but not earned (chance). Exo. 23: 12

3-   No merit, lack mental, physical input

4-   No production process

5-   No equity, just nor fair play

6-   No spiritual impact

7-   No intellectual impact

8-   No learning or transferable skills

9-   No legacy

10-It is greed driven

11-Entry usually by hasty decisions. Prov. 21: 5

     12-Lack of contentment

13-Motion without movement. Once people get hooked to betting or gambling, it becomes a habit that they always go for thereby draining their finances.

14-It causes pain when you lose

15-When you think you win, some are crying

16-Even when you win, pain follow the seeming gain. Bad habits and careless spending

17-Mostly illegal. A Christian must avoid illegal business even if some are legal, we should avoid betting.

Most people who have won jackpot, lottery etc all over the world had ended up becoming poorer some even died pauper. The reason is not far-fetched. Unknown to them, “money has power to make you do what you don’t want to do.” Their propensity to consume suddenly rises even as their appetite for luxury change. Prov. 13: 11. They easily lavish money on vagaries or mundane things of the world. 1 John 2: 15-17. Suddenly, they lust after devouring habits while their perception change and they begin to think money can handle relationships as they spend freely. Some become alcoholics, womanizers, live abnormally luxurious lives and throw caution away. Like the prodigal son, they mostly end up impoverished. Even when some investments are made, simply because of no investment skill and they lacked financial discipline, they consume more. They soon bungle their investment on the platter of pleasure!

As Christians, we must work hard and trust God to bless the work of our hands. Prov. 22: 29

Another form of gambling among the youths is what is termed pseudo-gambling. This manifests in two ways:

1-   A lot of youths, instead of going to College even some who made it to college prefer to go into sports, music, drama, comedy, show biz, movie etc solely for money. There is nothing wrong in these professions if the motive is right and there is skill with passion.

2-   Some people choose career solely to make money. As Christians, we should wait on the Lord to guide, direct and lead us into His will for our life.

The Bible says, those who are led by the Spirit are the children of God. Rom. 8: 14.

This gives the individual maximum blessing and fulfilment. It helps him/her to make positive impact on others too. Isa. 30:1-2. Ps. 25: 4-5. John 14:18

We can’t go against God’s principles and win. The Bible says,

A devout life does bring wealth, but it’s the rich simplicity of being yourself before God….But if it’s only money these leaders are after, they’ll self-destruct in no time. Lust for money brings trouble and nothing but trouble. Going down that path, some lose their footing in the faith completely and live to regret it bitterly ever after.” 1 Timothy 6:6-10 MSG

Quit gambling. Spend time in prayer to seek God’s face. We are created and saved for a purpose. But, ignorance of purpose makes people gamble their time and resources. When you don’t know the purpose of a thing, abuse is inevitable. Isa. 40: 30-31

The Lord will send rain at the proper time from his rich treasury in the heavens and will bless all the work you do. You will lend to many nations, but you will never need to borrow from them.” Deut. 28: 12 (NLT)
